11:21 am EST: Chris Warner called today via satellite phone. It seems that
Base Camp is having telecom trouble and unable to get an email out. Joel called
tech support, but they were unable to dispatch a technician, citing prohibitive
travel costs. Good help is hard to find these days.
The Team is safely at Camp 3 after fighting through nasty
conditions all day. They left Camp 2 in deteriorating weather, climbing in a steady
20 mph wind, gusting 40 to 60 mph. Temperatures stayed ten to twenty degrees
below freezing, without the wind chill. Chris reported that the lower
two-thirds of the route were completely scoured of snow by the wind; the Team
found themselves climbing on hard pack. While leading the upper third, Bruce
Normand forced his way through waist deep snow. During the climb, the three
constantly found themselves fighting to stay warm and keep their hands, feet
and faces from getting frostbitten.
Weather tomorrow is forecasted to be improving with winds in
the 10-20 mph range. Chris, Don and Bruce plan on moving up to establish Camp
4.
The Shared Summits Team is currently the highest on the
mountain and will be in the best position to take advantage of the forecasted summit
weather window on Thursday. Weather on their planned summit day is projected as
having wind speeds from 0-10 mph and temperatures hovering around zero
Fahrenheit with no humidity.
Chris reported that they may have been one of only two teams
to move up today. One of the Korean Teams may have moved from Camp 1 to Camp 2.
Most Teams on the Abruzzi
hunkered down where they were.
Currently, Chris estimates the other teams' locations as
follows:
- Half of the Russian Team is at Camp 2
- The second half of the Russian Team is at Camp 1
- Joao Garcia, from Portugal, is at Camp 2
- The Korean Men's Team is at Camp 1
- The Korean Women's Team Sherpas are at Camp 2
- The Italian Team is at Camp 1
