Below are diary entries journaling the team's ascent from C3
to C4. Joel Shalowitz
Wednesday, 7:05 am
Don calls down to Base Camp from Camp 3 to check in. After yesterday's dust has settled, our three
climbers are the only ones that forged to Camp 3 on the Abruzzi.
Don says the conditions are calm and they are just beginning to boil
water for breakfast. He asks Stensland
to see if there is any activity yet on either the Cesan or Abruzzi routes...
Chris grabs the binoculars and reports back; none so far. Don guesses that
climbers from various Camp 1s and 2s will start moving in the next hours and
expects that at Base Camp, we'll be getting visitors all day checking on
progress and conditions higher up. He
ends with, "Looks like we'll be spearheading this thing."
Wednesday, 8:30 am
Conditions above the climbers are foggy - Chris explains
that the plan is to leave at 10:00am unless the Russians, who have left Camp 2
earlier this morning, are planning to go on to C4 today, in which case, we will
wait for them to break trail together.
Wednesday, 10:00 am
Joel visits Russian base camp to determine the status of the
Russian climbers. He is told that the
four climbers are split and that the lead two are 300 meters below C3 - when
they get there, they wish to speak to our team about a plan.
